What ages are served at Community Co.?

At Community Co., we welcome families with children ages 3 to 5 years of age (not yet eligible for kindergarten).

How many children will be in the pod with my child and what are their ages?

All of our learning spaces are mixed age groups.  There are four learning spaces with only six homeschoolers per space, totaling 24 students for the entire pod.

Educational Philosophy

A Montessori-inspired preschool incorporates key principles from the Montessori method, though it may adapt the approach to fit different settings. Here’s what you might find in a Montessori-inspired preschool:

  • Child-Led Learning: Montessori-inspired preschools prioritize children’s interests, allowing them to choose activities and learn at their own pace through exploration and discovery.

  • Prepared Environment: Classrooms are organized to encourage independence, with materials thoughtfully arranged to be accessible, inviting, and purposeful.

  • Hands-On Materials: Learning tools are tactile and sensory-based, designed to develop fine motor skills, problem-solving, and practical life skills.

  • Teacher as Guide: Teachers observe children and guide them gently, fostering autonomy rather than directing every step.

  • Mixed-Age Classrooms: Classes often include mixed-age groups, enabling children to learn from peers, collaborate, and develop empathy.

  • Practical Life Skills: Emphasis is placed on everyday activities, like pouring, tying, and sorting, building children’s confidence and self-sufficiency.

  • Focus on Independence: Activities are designed to help children develop self-control, decision-making, and self-care skills.

While a Montessori-inspired preschool may not implement the original Montessori method entirely, it incorporates many of its core principles to create a child-centered, engaging learning environment.

What is a Reggio Inspired Curriculum?

A Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool incorporates key principles and practices from the Reggio Emilia approach, though it may not implement the approach in its entirety. Here’s what you might find in a Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool:

A Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool adapts key elements from the Reggio approach:

  • Child-Centered Learning: Driven by children’s interests, promoting exploration through play.

  • Environment as a Teacher: Spaces encourage creativity and hands-on learning.

  • Project-Based Exploration: Activities deepen understanding of topics.

  • Documentation: Teachers record progress to guide learning and involve families.

  • Teacher as Facilitator: Teachers support, rather than direct, learning.

  • Family and Community Involvement: Families are partners in education.

  • Respect for the Child: Children’s autonomy and ideas are valued.

  • Creative Expression: Art is central to learning.

This approach fosters a holistic, engaging learning environment.

Why is play-based learning more effective for ages 0-5?

  • Natural Developmental Stages: Play matches children’s rapid growth, allowing them to learn naturally and at their own pace.

  • Engagement: Play is enjoyable, increasing motivation and retention.

  • Social Skills: Play fosters communication, sharing, and conflict resolution.

  • Critical Thinking: Play encourages problem-solving and hands-on exploration.

  • Physical Growth: Movement in play supports motor skills.

  • Language: Play enriches vocabulary and storytelling.

  • Intrinsic Motivation: Curiosity drives learning, not external rewards.

  • Adaptability: Play is flexible, adapting to children’s interests and needs.

Will my child be academically ready for kindergarten with play-based preschool?

  • Early Literacy: Children develop vocabulary, storytelling, and listening skills.

  • Math Concepts: Play introduces counting, sorting, and shapes.

  • Social Skills: Children learn collaboration, sharing, and conflict resolution.

  • Executive Function: Play builds self-control, planning, and problem-solving.

  • Curiosity: Fosters a love for learning and exploration.

  • Independence: Encourages self-regulation and decision-making.

This balanced approach ensures readiness for kindergarten, blending play with basic academic concepts.

Why is age 0-5 so critical for development?

Brain development between ages 0-5 is crucial because this period lays the foundation for a child's cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Remarkably, about 90% of the brain’s structure and function is established by age 5. During these early years, the brain is highly plastic and exceptionally receptive to new experiences and learning. Early interactions, such as responsive caregiving, social engagement, and stimulating environments, significantly influence the formation of neural connections. These early experiences help shape critical skills such as language, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Investing in brain development during this formative stage can lead to better learning outcomes, healthier relationships, and improved overall well-being as children grow.

Community Engagement

Who can attend community engagement activities?
